Actually I think The Jackal has the best soundtrack of any movie.

Miller's Crossing - The image of the hat rolling through the autumn leaves with the majestic theme running behind is an absolute triumph in cinema.
Not an opening but the use of Amy Mann's Wise up in Magnolia is also magnificent.

Something a bit different that any fellow parent might know very very well.
"Put on Your Sunday Clothes" from Hello Dolly at the beginning of WALL-E. Sets the scene and the pace of the film (the greatest animated movie of all time BTW) from the very first moment.

Just for the beauty of the song, the machine, the scenery - here's Matt Monro crooning at the beginning of the Italian Job...

Totally agree. I remember when I was a kid, Barry Norman showed the "Leave the kid alone" bit on Film 79, and you just knew you had to see it. He showed a bit of the classroom argument as well "Mr Sharp, now them white boys here, they's gettin' obstreperous!"

my favourite use of music in a film is in Lost in Translation.....music heavy film, but then there's a period in it when they don't play a song for a while, and then a MBV song comes out of nowhere...

Although the beginning, and indeed ending, music in Trainspotting is superb I still rate the use of Perfect Day in that film as one of the most effective and unsettling pieces of music in film. Same with Mean Streets, Be My Baby is wonderful but still less effective than the use Of Jumpin Jack Flash when they walk into the bar. Other personal favs include the beginning of Manhattan, the use of The End in Apocalypse Now, the jazz in Sweet Smell of Success and the opening credits of You Only Live Twice !
